The Morning Huddle – February 7th, 2017

Super Bowl fever may be over, and we may still be recovering from the New England Patriots’ epic comeback, but there’s still plenty abuzz in the sports world. For starters, New England’s Devin McCourty says he won’t visit a Trump White House as is tradition for Champions, NBA trades are looming, and Baylor fired an assistant coach who was arrested in a prostitution ring. Those aren’t even the top headlines for this Tuesday morning. Here are the top things you need to know today:

Cavs Beat Wizards in OT

lebron vs wizards

This score seems more fitting for an All Star game, when players are showing off and playing minimal defense (except for those amazing blocks that make us jump out of our seats). But, no, we did not fast forwarded to February, 20th. The Cavaliers really did beat the Wizards 140-135 in overtime. LeBron James hit a game-tying 3-pointer with less than a second left on the clock to send the game to OT tied at 120. The Cavaliers star scored 32 points and dished out 17 assists. Kevin Love added another 39 points and 12 rebounds.

On the other side, Bradley Beal led the wizards with 41 points. John Wall added another 22 points and 12 assists.

The Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins is facing a one-game suspension after receiving his 16th technical foul this season, with half the season still ahead of us. The big man picked up two technical fouls during their Monday night loss to the Chicago Bulls, the second one came with only 1.1 seconds to go in the game.

The two technicals will be reviewed by the league. If upheld the Kings will have to play without Cousins, who’s averaging 28.1 PPG and 10.6 rebounds this season, on Wednesday.

The 49ers have a new head coach. The Bay area team announced they are hiring Falcons’ offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, to head the team. Over his 13 seasons in the NFL, Shanahan was offensive coordinator for the Texans, Browns and Redskins, and was named AP Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016.

The 49ers had to wait until after the Super Bowl to finalize the deal and officially hire Shanahan. He will be formally introduced as the Niners head coach later this week.

LA Olympics 2024 – The Donald Approves

Olympic rings

President Donald Trump made his first public comments about Los Angeles’ bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games saying the International Olympic Committee was “very happy” when they spoke. According to NBC Sports, Trump said “They wanted to have an endorsement from me, and I gave it to them very loud and clear…I would love to see the Olympics go to Los Angeles. I think that it’ll be terrific.” LA, Paris and Budapest are all competing for the Games, and members are due to vote on the host city in September.
