Competing in a triathlon is one of the greatest achievements in the sporting world as it involves mastering three grueling disciplines. Triathletes will compete against each other in swimming, cycling, and long-distance running. It is considered, alongside the heptathlon, to be the ultimate endurance event and the pinnacle of modern athletics. To be a triathlete you have to be strong, fit, and determined, and, of course, you have to have amazing fitness levels.

If you harbor aspirations of competing in a triathlon, you will need to know the best way of preparing yourself. There are so many things you’re going to need to get right, and it’s important to make sure you are properly prepared. There is a lot involved in the buildup to competing, and you need to take a look at our suggestions to help you prepare yourself as well as you can for a competitive triathlon.

Train every day

It goes without saying that you need to make sure you train every day. Make sure you put in some exercise and training on a daily basis – it’s crucial that you condition your body correctly. Try to make sure you keep your weekday workouts short, like a half hour or so. Then, at weekends you can really focus on endurance and conditioning. You have to remember that, when you train for a marathon, you shouldn’t run the full marathon until the day, and the same applies with a triathlon.

Don’t train alone

Training and preparing for a triathlon can be one of the most grueling and difficult things you will ever attempt. For this reason, it is imperative that you make sure you don’t train alone. It’s going to be very difficult to get yourself motivated and inspired when you’re only answering to yourself. Getting a training partner is the best way of making sure you keep yourself in the zone and make sure you’re dedicated. Get a partner or at least a trainer, and this will help you be better prepared to face a triathlon.

Get the right gear

You can’t just put on your jeans and t-shirt, leave the house, and start training for a triathlon. This is one of the most difficult and challenging events you can possibly take part in, so you need to be sure you have the right gear. That means ensuring you get the perfect pair of running shoes, light, comfortable, and durable. You also need to choose your bike very carefully as well. You don’t need to get a specific race bike, but you will need to make sure the bike is strong, comfortable, and in good working order. Make sure you have the right clothing for when you’re cycling and running as well, such as cycling shorts, and goggles and a swimming cap.

Make time for it

You’re going to have to be prepared to put in a lot of time and effort in preparation. This is not something you’re going to be able to do half-heartedly. The best thing to do would be to set yourself around 12 weeks to get into shape. This should be enough time to condition your body and get your stamina levels as high as possible. That way you only need to train 5 days a week for around 3-4 hours per week. If you can get these workouts in regular as clockwork, you will be ready to push yourself in the ultimate endurance event.

Training and preparing for a triathlon is something a lot of people never get around to, so it’s an achievement in and of itself. But, if you want to prepare properly you’re going to need structure and routine. If you can follow some of the ideas above, you will be well placed to ace that triathlon without injury.
